Position Overview:
The Youth Services Librarian – Children’s Services Focus is responsible for fostering a community of readers and life-long learning across Mid-Continent Public Library’s (MCPL) service area. This role focuses on supporting a high-quality, equitable, and inclusive library experience for children ages 6-12.

Reports to: Youth Services Manager
Salary/Wage: $48,379 full-Time, exempt, benefits eligible
Schedule: M-F 8-5, may require some evenings and weekends based on department and programming needs

Essential Job Functions:

  • Children’s Services Expertise
    • Ensures a positive library experience for children and families
    • Understands and applies knowledge of the impact of childhood learning and development stages on literacy
    • Stays informed of current trends, emerging technologies, issues, and research in child development, education, and allied fields
    • Demonstrates a knowledge and appreciation of literature, periodicals, audiovisual materials, websites, and other electronic media that are designed and intended for children and their caregivers
    • Advocates on behalf of children and their families for the highest-quality library services and strives to eliminate barriers.
    • Develops communications for staff and outside agencies in cooperation with the Youth Services Manager and Marketing Department
    • Collaborates with branches to discern unique community needs to develop relevant staff-created programs for the community
    • Assists with grant writing and management
  • Programming and Services
    • Develops, coordinates, provides training for, and evaluates high-quality programming and services both virtual, pre-recorded, and in-person in partnership with branches and departments.
    • Connect directly with children and caregivers in our area to gain insight into their needs for programming and services from their public library.
    • Support MCPL’s Grow A Reader Page and Website by regularly maintaining links and create content in partnership with the Electronic Resources Department
    • Create and promote Bibliocommons lists for MCPL Kids with support from the branch staff
    • Creates and provides Reader’s Advisory training and lists in children’s literature trends for staff and parents/caregivers in partnership with the Information and Reader Services Department
    • Evaluate and maintain materials in Booking to ensure the right equipment and materials are available
  • Training, Professional Development, and Communication
    • Evaluates the needs for staff training on topics related to children and designs, schedules, and conducts training and professional development for Youth Services Associates
    • Attends various school age programs to support Youth Services Associates and connect with community
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with members of the Homeschool community
    • Connect with Youth Services Associates to identify areas of support
    • Create and implement new hire youth services orientation for Youth Services Associates
    • Create opportunities for Youth Services Associates to share ideas across the system
    • Respond to recommendations from the branches and community on how to improve services
    • Create and implement training on booking items to ensure branch staff are aware of the equipment available
  • Children’s Services Outreach Support
    • Establish youth outreach priorities for children in the MCPL area
    • Create Tier system for youth outreach partnerships for organizations that serve children
    • Create best practices for managing these relationships
    • Create menu of services in partnership with the organizations which includes analyzing the capacity of MCPL Departments and Branches
  • Community Partners
    • Support adoption of Student Accounts at participating school districts and implement strategies for engagement with schools and keeping student accounts active throughout the year
    • Contribute to Educator Newsletter content
    • Identify new community partners throughout the MCPL service area and develop relationships that connect the library to our community
    • Possession of a valid driver license and a reliable personal vehicle for use in carrying out the duties of this position including transportation of materials and equipment (mileage reimbursed)

Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • Substitutes for branch programming hosting when needed as Youth Services Department capacity allows
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the Department Intranet page
  • Serves on youth related committees
  • Attends conferences and workshops
  • Successfully communicates library policies, procedures, and best practices about the Youth Services Department, to internal and external customers of all ages
  • Represents the MCPL Youth Services Department at various functions, meetings, and outreach events
  • Represents the Library’s literacy initiatives in the community, locally, statewide, and nationally through presentations, trainings, and communications

Remote Work Classification:

  • Remote work may be available up to 2 days a week as scheduled by the supervisor and subject to the needs of the department or branch. Staff who are overtime exempt may complete some incidental tasks remotely as part of their regular duties and as approved by their supervisor. A signed Remote Work Agreement is required.
  • This position may be converted to full-time remote work temporarily in the event of an emergency that prohibits employees from working on location for an extended period.

Experience and Training:

  • Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited program required
  • 3 years of relevant experience working in a public library setting
  • Minimum of 2 years of programming experiences is strongly preferred
  • Grant management and reporting experience is preferred
  • Intermediate level competency in Microsoft 365

Essential physical abilities to be accomplished with or without reasonable accommodation are:

  • Clarity of speech and hearing which permits the employee to communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and other employees.
  • Vision which permits the employee to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports, and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form.
  • Manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate a keyboard and any other assigned equipment to process library materials.
  • Personal mobility which permits the employee to monitor, supervise, and perform assigned indoor and outdoor library operations, and to attend Library district, community, and public meetings at various locations. This includes navigating outdoor sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, and landscaping safely.
  • Lift up to 40 pounds, push and pull carts weighing up to 200 pounds, bend, stoop and reach shelving from floor level to 6 feet high, and stand or walk for at least 1 hour at a time.
  • Reasonable tolerance for weather, dust, mold, scents, allergens, and communicable diseases which permits the employee to handle library materials, work in older buildings, and interact with coworkers and the public.
  • Ability to perform job requirements while adhering to MCPL’s safety protocols. This includes wearing a mask and other protective equipment as directed during pandemic or other emergency operations.
