Position Highlights
As Digital Preservation Librarian, the incumbent will sustain and further develop the Libraries’ digital preservation program, set strategic directions based on emerging best practices, and ensure the long-term viability of the libraries’ digital assets. They will establish strategy, policies, procedures, and best practices for the long-term access, management, and preservation of digital content and collections. The position collaborates across multiple Library departments and with campus and partner institutions in Arizona to implement digital strategies, policies, processes, system requirements, and partnerships around the long-term preservation of assets under the Libraries’ stewardship. The role guides and implements preservation best practices and workflow integration between systems across the libraries to enable long-lived digital objects. This position will also have the opportunity to develop new service models for web archiving and born-digital media preservation through the Digital Preservation Lab. Key stakeholders for collaboration include Special Collections and Technology Strategy & Services within the Libraries, cultural heritage institutions on campus, our consortial partners at Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University, and partners affiliated with APTrust.

As Unit Lead, the incumbent will oversee activities associated with both the digital preservation lab and the digital production lab. The Unit Lead will be responsible for shaping a programmatic vision for digital production and stewardship of digitized and born-digital content in consultation with library and campus colleagues. This is a new unit for the University of Arizona Libraries, and it is expected that the successful candidate will dedicate concerted effort at the start of their tenure on service set up and development. Unit Lead responsibilities will be allocated at approximately 20% FTE and will include managing unit operations as well as supervising 3 staff members who comprise the unit (a digital production manager, a digital preservation technician, and a digital production technician). This position will report to the head of Collection Services and collaborate with colleagues across the Libraries to foster support for digital stewardship at the University of Arizona Libraries.

This is a continuing-eligible or continuing track, academic professional position. Digital Production and Preservation Unit Management (20%)

  • Provide operational leadership for the Digital Producation and Preservation Unit in collaboration with the department head
  • Work with members of the unit to define and implement unit goals, including mission, vision, and milestones associated with the provision of digital production and preservation services.
  • Supervise and manage the day-to-day work of 3.0 FTE, including the annual performance conversations and performance management processes
  • Work with staff within the unit to set individual priorities
  • Alongside the department head, provide ongoing mentorship to direct reports for professional growth and career advancement and coach them on being active, contributing members of the department, the Libraries, and the University community
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard employees in the unit
  • Work closely and communicate regularly with the other unit leads and department head towards departmental goals and objectives
  • Work across UAL with other units and departments to advance unit, departmental, and UAL goals.

Digital Preservation Program Management (60%)

  • Uphold UAL digital preservation policy and further develop digital preservation strategy
  • Collaborate with Special Collections, TeSS, and other library departments on programmatic digital preservation activities, such as archival storage infrastructure and administration, digital forensics workflows, born-digital special collections workflows, and web archiving
  • Build out existing digital stewardship programs such as the Web Archiving Program, the Digital Preservation Lab, and implementation of policies and procedures
  • Develop, manage, and build service requirements for the Digital Preservation Lab
  • Manage, troubleshoot, and maintain software and hardware used in the Digital Preservation Lab
  • Develop, manage, and implement web archiving policies and procedures, and collaboratively develop a strategy for collection development and workflow implementation through a distributed staffing model
  • Manage and act as point person for APTrust and Archive-It
  • Establish strategic partnerships to strengthen community-wide digital stewardship initiatives, both within and beyond the University of Arizona campus.

Scholarship (10%)

  • Conduct relevant scholarly research and disseminate findings through writing and other venues.
  • Develop and deliver presentations related to academic libraries, higher education, and topics relevant to areas of responsibility.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continual professional development.

Service (10%)

  • Contribute to the library profession through service and engagement with professional associations and allied stakeholders.
  • Participate on committees and project teams as assigned. The nature and amount of work may vary from year to year and includes participation in UAL shared governance.

  • Knowledge of national and international efforts addressing preservation issues
  • Knowledge of national and international standards and best practices for digitization
  • Experience with digital forensics practices, tools, and techniques (e.g., BitCurator, Forensic Toolkit, forensic imaging, data migration methods, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Python and experience using the command line to automate workflows
  • Excellent analytical, time management, organizational, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to conceive, plan, document, and complete projects or complex assignments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited degree program or an advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, workflows, and deadlines
  • Experience coordinating groups within in an academic library setting (e.g., service committee, working group, task force, interest group, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with digital preservation systems, standards, workflows, and processes
  • Experience with preservation metadata standards and digital preservation tools
  • Evidence of the ability to achieve continuing status (equivalent to tenure) if hired at the level of assistant librarian, including contributing to the information/library profession and to fulfilling the responsibilities of a library faculty member through service and scholarship
